Halfmoon General is a Sunshine Coast landmark. Established in 1937,
the site has served the community as general store, post office,
steamship stop, auto shop, and community hub – a primary function
that appears to have preceded the store and which it retains to
this day.
PLACE was tasked with revitalizing the aging structures. Through a
delicate progression of design, community outreach, and construction,
the store moved from one building to the other, and back, while the
two buildings were entirely replaced. Preserved original details,
materials, massing and colors maintain continuity between old and
renovated/ reconstructed original buildings. Modern interventions
are expressed with a different set of details where spaces are new.
The result is a pair of new buildings that hold the lifeline of the
store intact, with no loss of community connection and no days
closed from start to finish.
